Who we are
Dahlgren Boat Works is Stuart and Joy Dahlgren.
We are sailors first, and most of what we do comes from years spent racing, cruising, fixing boats, making sails, and helping other people get more out of their time on the water. Stuart grew up around professional mariners, and Joy sailed with her parents in the French Caribbean. Boats have been part of both of our lives for a long time.
In 2011, we bought an existing sail loft on Vancouver Island and turned sailmaking into our full time work. In 2014, we built a new building and moved in, and that same shop is now home to Dahlgren Boat Works. Over the years, we built sails for everything from ocean racing boats to cruising yachts and traditional vessels. That work taught us to care about the details, not in a precious way, but because small details are often what make a boat easier, safer, and faster to use.
Today, Dahlgren Boat Works is focused on practical, hands on boat work. That can mean rigging, refit planning, performance consulting, project management, or helping put the pieces together for a racing campaign. We like projects where the goal is clear, the boat matters to the owner, and the solution needs more than just ordering parts from a catalogue.
We are not trying to be everything to everyone. Much of this work happens quietly, by referral, alongside our day to day work in the sailmaking world. But if you have found your way here, you probably already have a boat, a problem worth solving, or an idea worth talking through.
We would be happy to hear about it.
